Milwaukee Area Fire Damage Cleanup and Restoration Services

Fire damage often leaves one feeling overwhelmed and safety should be the first goal to achieve.  When the time comes to clean-up, DON'T SIGN WITH THE FIRST COMPANY.  Talk with your insurance company and INTERVIEW different companies.  Servpro of Milwaukee North DOES NOT approach customers when they are stressed and attempt to solicit their business.  Time should be taken to learn how you will be working with the contractor for the next 3-12 months

Servpro of Milwaukee North offers 3 areas of service which can be carried out INDEPENDENTLY:

  • Emergency Stabilization & Cleaning - If water was used to extinguish the fire it is important to control the possible water damage.  Servpro responds with board-up, dry-out, and cleaning services which are important to slow and eliminate further damage.  Soot and smoke particles penetrate soft goods such as clothing, furniture, carpet and prove to be lingering problems if not properly and promptly cleaned.
  • Contents Cleaning, Pack-out and Inventory Services - Unfortunately some fire damage situations require personal contents to be moved out of the damage area.  Servpro provides a constant representative who will be responsible for managing your items while they are in our care.  Respect and understanding help customers teach us what is most important to clean and restore damaged contents.  Servpro appreciates the opportunity to help and we respect our responsibility to you.
  • Construction Services - When the cleaning is done and odors have been eliminated; rebuilding should already be in discussions between the customer and contractor to pre-plan as many items as possible to expedite the process.  Experience is important because fire damage situations require knowledge of building cavities where smoke and soot can travel.  The photos below represent a job in which we followed the smoke damage in-between the walls:

Will your contractor work this hard to ensure your satisfaction?

Each Fire Damage loss requires a detailed inspection to determine what material burned and what type of cleaning is most effective.  The following are different types of common fire damages:

Kitchen / Grease Fires

The kitchen is often the source of many types of fires; common household cooking ingredients can become dangerous because of flashpoint temperatures when combustion will become imminent.  CAUTION must be used because water is NOT the preferred way of extinguishing these fires.  Please make sure you understand what your local fire department recommends for fire extinguishers and HAVE THEM READY in case of emergency.

Furnace Puff-Back

Without warning furnace systems (typically oil burning) can have a puff-back; this is caused by an explosion inside the combustion chamber caused by the fast ignition of built-up gas or oil vapors.  The puff-back causes combustion material to backflow into your home thru the vents.  The results can be very nasty. The furnace will first need to be repaired by a qualified oil-burner technician before any cleanup can be done or else the "soot" will continue to float everywhere each time the furnace kicks on. The residue that comes with a puff-back isn't so much dust as it is part petroleum (oil-based) particles. This is one of the reasons that the soot "sticks" to absolutely everything in the house and smears when you attempt to clean it.  We treat puff-backs the same way that we do fire and smoke restoration. In general, cleaning should begin within 24-48 hours of the incident to limit damage.  Servpro of Milwaukee North provides:

The soot from this vent can travel around your home discoloring each surface it lands on.

Appliance Fire

Each day appliances work hard for our needs - when something goes wrong it is important to know how to react.  The following explanation of fire extinguishers can be the difference between reacting correctly and causing further fire damage.

Everyone should have at least one fire extinguisher in their Milwaukee home, but it's just as important to ensure you have the proper type of fire extinguisher. Fire protection experts recommend one for the kitchen, the garage and workshop.

Fire extinguishers are divided into four categories, based on different types of fires. Each fire extinguisher also has a numerical rating that serves as a guide for the amount of fire the extinguisher can handle; the higher the number, the more fire-fighting power. The following is a quick guide to help choose the right type of extinguisher.

Fire extinguishers help prevent Fire Damage

  • Class A extinguishers are for ordinary combustible materials such as paper, wood, cardboard, and most plastics. The numerical rating on these types of extinguishers indicates the amount of water it holds and the amount of fire it can extinguish.
  • Class B fires involve flammable or combustible liquids such as gasoline, kerosene, grease and oil. The numerical rating for class B extinguishers indicates the approximate number of square feet of fire it can extinguish.
  • Class C fires involve electrical equipment, such as appliances, wiring, circuit breakers and outlets. Never use water to extinguish class C fires - the risk of electrical shock is far too great! Class C extinguishers do not have a numerical rating. The C classification means the extinguishing agent is non-conductive.
  • Class D fire extinguishers are commonly found in a chemical laboratory. They are for fires that involve combustible metals, such as magnesium, titanium, potassium and sodium. These types of extinguishers also have no numerical rating, nor are they given a multi-purpose rating - they are designed for class D fires only.

Some fires may involve a combination of these classifications. Your fire extinguishers should have ABC ratings on them.

Here are the most common types of fire extinguishers:

  • Water extinguishers or APW extinguishers (air-pressurized water) are suitable for class A fires only. Never use a water extinguisher on grease fires, electrical fires or class D fires - the flames will spread and make the fire bigger! Click here to see how to use a fire extinguisher to prevent further fire damage to your Wisconsin home.  Water extinguishers are filled with water and pressurized with oxygen. Again - water extinguishers can be very dangerous in the wrong type of situation. Only fight the fire if you're certain it contains ordinary combustible materials only.
  • Dry chemical extinguishers come in a variety of types and are suitable for a combination of class A, B and C fires. These are filled with foam or powder and pressurized with nitrogen.
    • BC - This is the regular type of dry chemical extinguisher. It is filled with sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate. The BC variety leaves a mildly corrosive residue which must be cleaned immediately to prevent any damage to materials.
    • ABC - This is the multipurpose dry chemical extinguisher. The ABC type is filled with monoammonium phosphate, a yellow powder that leaves a sticky residue that may be damaging to electrical appliances such as a computer

Dry chemical extinguishers have an advantage over CO2 extinguishers since they leave a non-flammable substance on the extinguished material, reducing the likelihood of re-ignition.

Take control of your home - follow the checklist below to get started:

  • Place a smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside bedrooms. If you keep your bedroom doors closed, place a smoke alarm in each bedroom.
  • Regularly inspect your extension cords for fraying and never use an extension cord as permanent wiring.
  • Instead of a simple extension cord, get units with built-in circuit breakers evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL).
  • Routinely check your wiring. Look for outlets that don't work, light switches that are hot to the touch and lights that flicker.
  • Never overload outlets or extension cords.
  • Immediately repair appliances or lamps that sputter or spark.
  • Keep appliances away from wet areas, especially in the kitchen, bathroom, basement, and garage.
  • If an appliance has a three-prong plug, never force it into a two-slot outlet or extension cord.
  • Don't let children play near electrical space heaters. Keep clothes, curtains, and other flammable items at least 3 feet away from heaters.
  • Prepare and practice a home fire escape plan.
  • In case of a fire, crawl or stay low to the ground, beneath the smoke.

Fire Damage can be prevented; make sure time is taken to prepare properly.
